As you delve into your studies, you may find that you have difficulty studying. Maybe your roommates are distracting in your dorm room, the wind blows too hard outside on the picnic table, and nobody takes the study lounge seriously. Do not be distraught, there are plenty of other options! Consider lesser used chairs and tables, ambient coffee shops, or secret resource centers. All of these are available on most campuses and each provide their own benefits.
1) Coffee Shops
If you haven’t noticed, people are already using coffee shops for work and study. Not only are the environments usually relaxed and calming, the aroma of a coffee shop and the caffeine in the beans are enough to keep your head in the right state-of-mind for some hardcore studying. Add to that a blend of polite people, chill music, and comfortable chairs and you might consider being a college student for life, just so you can keep studying in the coffee shop.
2) Nooks and Crannies
As you explore your campus, keep a keen eye out for nooks and crannies that have chairs and tables. They are great places to sit comfortably, afford you plenty of space and privacy, but maintain the opportunity to see someone you know for a few minutes without taking you from your studies. My favorite place to study in college, as a biology major, was outside of an engineering classroom where a table with two chairs always sat quietly, I didn’t know anybody in engineering and that’s how I liked it.
3) Reading/Writing Centers
Not only did I spend time studying in the Writing Center as a student, I worked in one after I graduated. Can you guess what I found? The ‘squatters’ we called them; the students who knew how to study smart. Reading and Writing Centers have lots of advantages for studying. They are quiet, linked up with plenty of technology, and you have the greatest resource on Earth: the consultants! When I was a consultant, one of my favorite parts of the job was being asked questions by the ‘squatters.’ It was a wonderful opportunity to have a discussion about a myriad of topics. You’ll be learning things you didn’t know you wanted to know in the Reading and Writing Centers.
Conclusion
Secret corners, chill coffee shops, and hidden resource centers are all great options for places to study. Keep in mind, every campus is different and not all are equal. That being said, every campus has its hidden gems just waiting to be found and studied in. Found the right study spot, but still having difficulty studying in college? Now that you’ve read it, share this wisdom with your friends! What more could someone ask for as a gift for going to college than the gift of information? It’s why they are going to college, help them out!
