7 Healthy Eating Tips For Busy College Students

7 Healthy Eating Tips For Busy College Students
  • Opening Intro -

Average college students are often under a lot of stress and pressed for time due to the amount of schoolwork that they deal with on a daily basis.

As a result, most of them skip meals or eat from fast food restaurants.

-------------------------------------

Such bad habits have long-term devastating consequences; therefore it pays for every student to start eating healthy. Why? Because healthy, balanced meals can help you feel better, perform better both inside and outside the classroom and cope better with stress.

To help you get started, here are some healthy eating tips to try:

1. Don’t Skip Breakfast

Sometimes students skip breakfast either because they don’t have the time to prepare it or the money to afford it. However, several studies show that skipping this important meal can significantly distract you from your schoolwork.

How do you expect to concentrate in class on an empty stomach?

So, make it your responsibility every day to eat a healthy breakfast before heading out. If you are too busy, grab some juice, a bagel and piece of fruit. Such items can be stored easily in your hostel.

2. Keep Healthy Snacks Handy

Consider buying some healthy snacks like rice cakes, fresh fruits, unbuttered popcorn, or whole wheat crackers. These will come in handy when hunger strikes when you are studying late at night and prevent you from eating junk foods like ice cream or chips.

3. Limit Your Sugar Intake

Sugary foods like cookies and cakes are very tasty and convenient to eat on the go. However, such foods contribute considerably to tooth decay, so limit how much your consume. You might want to use diet sweeteners to sweeten your tea or coffee instead of sugar.

4. Drink Lots Of Water

You need a minimum of 8 glasses of water (or more if you exercise vigorously) daily to keep your body hydrated and organs functioning properly. But with the tight schedule that most college students have, it is not always possible for them to go back to their rooms to drink water. Therefore, consider carrying a bottle of water with you to class to keep body hydrated always.

5. Eat Lots Of Calcium-Rich Foods

Since most college students are in their twenties, they need foods rich in calcium to strengthen their bones so as to avoid getting osteoporosis later on. Low-fat cheese, low-fat yogurt and green leafy vegetables are just some of the foods that you should incorporate in your diet to provide your body with this important nutrient.

6. Limit Consumption Of Junk Foods

Junk foods are delicious and very tempting to most students. In fact, if you are not disciplined, you might find yourself eating them on a daily basis. However, doing so without exercising will surely make you obese and vulnerable to several health problems. Once in a while, you can treat yourself to your favorite fast foods, but don’t do it often.

7. Lose Weight Sensibly

If you are overweight in college and would love to lose the excess weight, avoid quick fixes like diets or starvation. That’s because such drastic weight loss methods are very harmful to your body and most of the time, they don’t work in the long run. So, you are better off with exercising regularly and eating a healthy balanced diet if you want to lose the weight and keep it off.
