Don’t despair. There are hundreds of others who have been in your shoes. With these essential tips, they managed to get ahead:
1. Carefully plan your work and class schedule
This is a no brainer! In order to successfully work and study at the same time, it’s important to ensure that your schedules do not collide. This will ensure that everything flows together and minimal time is wasted. Through research, you can find out what classes are offered and plan your work schedule accordingly. Take advantage of any free time in between classes to study or complete assignments.
2. Don’t waste any time
On a daily basis, there is a minute here and there that you can always take advantage of. College students spend their free time socializing or taking a nap in the dorm room. However, as a working student, you cannot afford such luxuries. Any time you save could be used towards making an income. Needless to say, every minute is important. For instance, you can cut down commute time by getting a job near campus.
3. Always have a to-do list
As a working student, you should always know exactly what has to be done and when. It’s common for people to forget things when they are overly busy; therefore, a to-do list will keep you in check and eliminate any time you may waste debating about whether you forgot to do something.
4. Learn to say no
Many college students agree to every opportunity that comes their way. You may want to honor that party invitation or attend that bonfire meeting. However, the yes mentality is not sustainable. You will be over committed to many unimportant things that will take your focus away from your job and your studies. In other words, it is important to be selective.
5. Have a day to yourself
Even the most determined student can burn out if they take on more they can handle. Always be realistic. No matter how occupied you are, always give yourself time to relax and decompress. Be sure to dedicate at least one day a week to doing what makes you happy.
6. Look at the bigger picture
Just imagine yourself graduating and receiving that hard-earned degree! Knowing that your hard work and all your sacrifices will pay off, in the end, will give you the motivation that you need to succeed. You can do this!
Now you know that being a working student is manageable. It may not be easy but with the right school, program and learning style, you can always get ahead. It’s worth it!
