While many people go into blogging assuming it’s easy and that people will read what they’ve got to say they soon find out this is not the case. With new blogs starting every day, if you want yours to stand out, or even make you some extra cash, it’s going to take a lot more than writing entertaining posts. The design of your blog is often as important as the content.
Here are some top tips to help you get it just right.
White Space
The use of white space is incredibly popular right now. Having plenty of white space on your website helps it to look clean and professional while allowing your content to take center stage.
Clear Branding
A clear and distinctive logo can help you to stand out and start to build an instantly recognizable brand. Your logo and color scheme should be something that you can adapt to use across social media profiles, as well as on email signatures and business cards.
Cross Platform Optimization
A good percentage of users are probably going to be viewing your blog on a tablet or smartphone. Try to remember this in all your design decisions. If you are working on a laptop or computer, be sure to check how well the layout looks and works on other size devices.
Ease of Use
This should be your main priority. Make sure it’s easy to use and that your users can find everything they need. Make sure you include an obvious search bar and social media buttons, as these are two of the first things people look for when visiting a site they love.
Font
It can be tempting to try and make your font unique. But, it must be easy to read. You could use fancier fonts on your headings or titles, but when used in the main text it can be hard to read and even hurt people’s eyes, so stick to simple, clear fonts.
Headers
Using headings and sub-headings makes your text look better. At first glance, it’s easier to read and engaging. A long page of unbroken text is overwhelming and off-putting.
Photos
You should also break your text up with photographs and pictures. The web generally is very visual and people prefer this to pages full of text. Use high-quality photos on the full width of your main section where you can.
Show Yourself
Blogs are meant to be personal. Your readers want to get to know you and this means they’re much more likely to respond and engage if they have a face to put to the words. So, don’t be shy. Include a photo of yourself in your sidebar and introduce yourself with an “about me” page.
While you certainly don’t need an online computer science masters to start a blog, it could be helpful, especially if you want to go pro. An online masters in computer science would give you all the skills you need to become a successful web developer, allowing you to take your student hobby to the next level.
