If you’re a college student and have spent a lot of time on campus, then you might have noticed flyers and posters advertising opportunities to study abroad in places like Spain, France, England, or Australia. Studying abroad can be an enlightening experience that offers chances to grow and mature as a person.
As you get older, things like work and family might keep you from traveling the world. College is the perfect opportunity to explore and see all the sights the world has to offer.
Of course, there are many benefits outside fulfilling a desire to travel. Studying abroad will help you in your educational and professional career. Before talking about that, however, let’s talk about the costs of studying abroad since that might be a roadblock for many students who would otherwise jump at the opportunity.
1. Cost
Because study abroad programs are so often sponsored and organized by the school, and because usually you are taking some coursework while studying abroad, these programs are often eligible for federal and state financial aid. Grants or loans can be for a large portion of the cost to travel abroad. Any money that you have from financial aid can also be used to cover the costs.
Outside of financial aid, there are many independent scholarships and grants that help fund disadvantage students to go study abroad. All it takes is a quick online search. Many of these programs simply require an essay on why you want to travel abroad and why you would benefit from it. Which is easy enough since there are many benefits to traveling abroad.
2. Learn a Culture and a Language
If you are aiming to study in a country where English is not the language of the land, places like France or Spain, then you will be given an incredible opportunity to learn a second language through immersion. Research has shown again and again that learning a second language is easier when you are surrounded by people who speak it and interact with them.
Not only a language, but you will also learn more about a culture and the worldview that comes with it.
This not only helps you grow as a person, but knowing more than one language and having the experience of traveling to another country is very attractive to potential employers and graduate schools.
3. Learn New Things, Meet New People
Studying abroad is a great way to make life-long friends in other countries. These friendships will teach you a lot about the world and the various cultures that live in it. You might also find new interests or learn something about yourself that you didn’t know before.
Studying abroad has many benefits besides being able to travel, though that is a nice perk. Studying abroad can open many doors in your future and will also help you mature as a fully realized human being.
