Chasing Your Dreams: 6 Career Change Myths That May Be Impacting Your Decision
  • Opening Intro -

You may have reached a point in your life where you feel that you have gone as far as you are likely to in your current career.

-------------------------------------

Alternatively, there may be a chance for advancement somewhere down the line, but you’re finding that the passion you once had for your profession is gone. If either of these is the case, then it is time to give serious consideration to switching careers. But it can be daunting, and you might be hesitant because of certain things that you have heard. Here are some common career change myths.

Once You Get To A Certain Juncture, You Can’t Switch

There seems to be a belief among some people that once you hit a particular age, you can’t switch careers anymore. Maybe the number you heard is 30, 40, or 50. Whatever the case may be, no age should be considered a cutoff in regards to when you can make a switch. It’s true that if you’ve been doing something for a long time then transitioning may be challenging, but it is still well within your powers.

If You Don’t Have the Training To Do Something, Then You Never Will

One aspect of changing careers that some people feel is an impediment is a lack of training in the new area that interests them. The reality is, though, if you have the desire to get the training necessary for you to switch to a different job, the force of your willpower should be enough to make that happen.

You Can Only Get a New Job Through Networking

While it is helpful to have an “in” to a new career in the form of a person that you know, there’s nothing to say that you have to do any extensive networking before you start applying for new jobs.

You can also work with recruiters and answer ads. Beefing up your resume by using a tool like LiveCareer can also be helpful as you prepare to go on interviews.

You Won’t Be Viewed As Favorably As Younger Candidates

If any company that is looking at you as a candidate cites your age as the reason you were turned down, that is discriminatory, and it is illegal. But chances are that’s never going to happen. There are plenty of companies that like candidates who are a little older because they have more life experience and are likely to know the value of a hard day’s work.

You Won’t Be Happy In A Role With Less Responsibility

If you change careers, then you may have to start further down the ladder than you were in your previous position. But that doesn’t need to be a bad thing. As you grow older, you may want less responsibility because there are other aspects of your life worthy of your attention besides your career. Also, if you are intent on securing a position with more prestige, you can work to get there.

You Won’t Like Younger Employees Being Your Supervisor

This is seldom as big of an issue as you might think that it will be. The age of someone who is in a position of authority over you should be irrelevant both to them and you, provided that they do not use your age or theirs as a point of contention between you.

It will never be too late to switch your career path if you sincerely want to do so. Set aside your fears and start to put together a plan of action if you feel that the time has come.
