DEFINITIONS

CAREER

The Oxford English dictionary defines career as the course or progress of an individual through life.

CAREER PLANNING

This is the continuous planning of one’s work life. Putting into consideration newly acquired skills, knowledge and circumstances of life.

INTRODUCTION

Career planing is a progressive process of making decisions in tandem with an individual’s skills, education and life circumstances. Career planning is a thing of the future and career planning is done to ensure an individual explores his/her options and makes decisions to ensure better personal working conditions and attainment of personal goals to bring about personal fulfillment.

STEPS

Career planning has four sides to it ie it is quadrangular. It involves the following steps.

  1. KNOWING YOURSELF
  2. EXPLORING YOUR OPTIONS
  3. MAKING DECISIONS
  4. MOVING FORWARD

1) KNOWING YOURSELF

The famous ancient Greek aphorism states ‘know thyself ‘. This aphorism is a call to self study and introspection. Every individual human being has something unique, something special and something signatory about himself/herself.

Nature itself speaks about this; no two humans share the same hand prints, even monozygotic or dizygotic twins do not share the same hand prints. So every human being should have something different to bring to the table at any point in time.

Knowing yourself involves coming to terms with your personal strengths, weaknesses and advantages. Knowing yourself involves asking questions like.

-What ticks you off?

-What turns you on?

-What spurs you on?

-What inspires you?

-What long-term and short term goals do you have?

-How are you working to achieve these goals?

Answering these questions well and considering them in career planning will be helpful.

2) EXPLORING YOUR OPTIONS

This is the step where an individual uses the self knowledge of step one to see what options suits him or her and what options will be best in achievement of personal goals.

3) MAKING DECISIONS

This involves taking the bold step and picking what best fits you as an individual. One is advised to follow his/her heart here. What is your passion in life? What problems do you want to solve for humanity?

We recommend you make flexible decisions ie make space for improvements, changes and upgrades since change is a constant thing and we live in an ever changing world. Stay updated.

4) MOVING FORWARD

Career planning is a future thing; it is done to avoid career stagnation. When you follow the above steps properly and answer the above questions properly and honestly you will surely be on your way forward.
