Three Reasons Why a Major Does not Determine the Type of Job

Three Reasons Why a Major Does not Determine the Type of Job

Studying a particular Field does not necessarily guarantee a job in that field.

A recent study conducted by the U.S Census Bureau in 2010 showed that only 27% of college graduates have a job that is related to the major that they studied.

A recent study conducted by the U.S Census Bureau in 2010 showed that only 27% of college graduates have a job that is related to the major that they studied. Spending four or more years studying for a particular field does not necessarily guarantee that they will land in a related job. This is because of the reasons below.

1. Soft skills are important

Most employers are looking at the soft skills that an individual has. They want to know if the individual is a fast learner, responsible or a team player. Employers are looking for candidates with problem-solving skills, critical thinking over the undergraduate field of study. This explains why companies like silicon valley are looking for employees who studied liberal arts as compared to those who followed the tech path and are now software engineers.

2. Following your purpose

Most people pursue a major because they are high paying or because they have perfect scores suitable for the course. After finishing school, they get bored with the job and end up looking for a job in a field they are passionate about.

Take for example a graduate who pursued computer science but is now working in an NGO concerned with environmental awareness.

Passion gives an individual unprecedented energy. Pursuing something that you love will result in you putting in a lot of effort and attention which leads to success. Happiness is the true key to success.

3. Having a network is more valuable than the major.

The education system encourages students to spend more time reading instead of interacting and having a healthy social circle. A graduate can choose a field that is very high paying, they can score all A’s in their classes or have a perfect GPA but without a solid network, they are nothing.

This is why it is important for those who want to be successful in their major to put in as much effort in networking as they do in their studies. If no one knows you no one will be interested in who you are.

Conclusion

Most individuals who spend most of their undergraduate life in their field of choice do not necessarily attain success as compared to those who arrived in the field with an unrelated major. Graduates who majored in sociology or history and are in the government are just as successful as those who majored in political science.

Share this article with your friends and family and create awareness that doing a certain major does not guarantee a job related to it. Who knows, you might inspire someone to go for their dream despite the field that they majored in.
