You may not have considered it before, and in fact you may have thought that “business” sounded dull.

But this path deserves a real look because business is one of those huge career categories, like science, that encompasses many specialties.

-------------------------------------

In fact, if you plan to work for yourself no matter what the field, you’ll be practicing business.

You don’t necessarily need an MBA to start a business career, but as a professional degree it prepares you for advancement and management positions in any business and in every industry. The program is focused on practical applications in a real-world setting rather than coursework that teaches theory and requires doing research.

If you’re currently working toward or about to complete an undergrad degree in an unrelated major like humanities or liberal arts, it won’t stop you at all from getting a master’s in business.

Actually, only about one out of three MBA candidates has a background in business subjects. More than what you decided to start studying when you were a freshman, business schools look at your experience and the qualities you can bring to the program.

What’s more, you don’t have to put job plans on hold and go to school because you can earn an MBA online while you’re already working.

Sound interesting? To help you decide, here are some facts you should know:

What It Takes to Get an MBA

Most admissions requirements include an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university, and, if your degree isn’t in business, it helps to have relevant work experience. Your undergrad GPA is definitely part of the mix for admission to a program, but a modest one can be given a boost by a strong work record and often also by personal references and recommendations.

Some schools do have pre-requisites in general accounting, statistics or finance, and you may have to take courses in those subjects before entering an MBA program. Even if they’re not required, though, if you’re not quite up to par in those areas you’ll find it helpful to brush up on the basic concepts so that you’ve got the groundwork in place before you dive in.

Career Possibilities With an MBA

MBA jobs include a wide number of positions in businesses of all sizes. It all depends upon what interests you and where you want your career to take you. Here are just a few of the options:

  • Marketing manager:

Marketing managers are responsible for directing market research and designing campaigns to create brand awareness, find new markets and motivate increased customer demand for a company’s products and services. Market research analyst is another specialty, although in smaller companies the marketing manager may also be charged with analyzing the potential for new products in the marketplace.

  • Business operations or logistics manager:

A position found largely in manufacturing companies, these managers determine and guide a company’s supply chain from raw materials to finished products and inventory control in order to run operations more efficiently and cost-effectively.

  • HR manager:

Human resources managers plan, coordinate and direct all of the administrative roles of an organization that involve the workforce. They are responsible for recruiting and hiring staff as well as administering compensation and benefits plans, training and safety programs and employee relations.

  • Operations manager:

An operations manager is responsible for general oversight, formulating policies and managing the daily needs and operations of the organization. In smaller companies, the job may include managing human resources, budgeting, purchasing or other areas. Another title for this position may be operations director or chief operations officer (COO).

other valuable tips:
  • Healthcare administrator:

Typically employed in medical facilities like hospitals and nursing homes, healthcare administrators provide planning, direction and coordination of medical services as well as compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

  • Management consultant or analyst:

Whether employed by a large consulting company, or working as a self-employed advisor, management consultants provide advice to organizations, so they can increase efficiencies, reduce costs and enhance profitability.

  • Entrepreneur:

If your dream is to start and operate your own business, an MBA sets you up for success by giving you the skills you need to start and remain financially healthy as well as the knowledge of best practices for operations, human resources, risk management and compliance with legal and ethical standards. An MBA on your resume can also make your enterprise more attractive to potential investors.

If one or more of these career paths interests or even surprises you, it’s worth it for your future to check it out.
