But when you learn how to deal with all the horrors – for example, laundry – you’ll start really enjoying the independence that college gives you. Here are some tips on how to prepare to make the transition as smooth as possible.
Learn about your new environment
Try to visit the place you’ll be moving to at least a couple of times before you actually move there. Learn your path from dorm to school, the public transport and find out if there are any other activities in the city that interest you. The more you make the entire city your home, the easier the transition will be. Find “your spot” among local coffee shops and get acquainted with the staff. Visit the library or a gym nearby and get comfortable there.
A lot of activities
There is a reason why there are so many different clubs and activities on college campuses – everyone needs a place to connect with like-minded people and feel like they belong. The less time you have to sit alone in your room and think about how much you miss home, the better.
Through activities, you’ll meet peers, find new hobbies and fill your schedule with something productive. You can find your place in something familiar, like a sport that you used to train back home, or you can explore and reinvent yourself by joining an acting class, a choir or a debate club.
Space out home visits
The more often you go home, the harder it will be to adapt to your new environment. Going home is one of the easiest ways to comfort yourself, but it’s also taking a step back on the path to becoming used to college life. The best thing I did for myself when I moved away was to sell my car for cash at Carbiz, so that I wasn’t tempted to drive up home every weekend.
It hurts the wallet a lot more when you have to buy a bus ticket every time you want to go, and it got me to stay at the college. After the first weekend spent with friends hanging out and having fun, I didn’t feel the need to go home anymore. When you start going home only for the holidays and important events, you learn to cherish that time more.
other valuable tips:
Talk openly about your feelings
You are literally surrounded every day with people going through the exact same thing you’re going through. You all miss home and you’re all struggling, so start sharing. Make sure you’re not sulking and sharing too many home stories, because that might make you miss family more, but be there for each other, spend time together so you don’t feel lonely.
The faster you make friends that you have real, deep connections with, the easier staying in college will be, since you’ll be wanting to spend time together whenever you can. Getting into a romantic relationship can also help, but make sure that’s not the only reason why you’re doing it!
In the end, we live in an age of digital media, so your family is only a few clicks away. However, you should still try to restrain yourself from calling them every time you feel lonely and find something to distract yourself until the feeling passes. And if you manage to make that balance, then going home will be the most precious time, and you will feel completely at home in the dorm you live in, which is the best situation you can hope for.
