Perhaps you had an easy time in high school. Maybe you were class president or even a member of the honor society. You may have graduated as valedictorian. You are excited to go to college because you think that it is another chance to prove your academic capabilities. It has to be about having fun and being independent. Right? Wrong! According to research, one in every five students drops out of college even before completing their first year.

You don’t have to learn the hard way. Here are 6 strategies that will enable any student to thrive and survive in college.

1. Start over

College offers you a clean slate. You do not have to worry about your past or being the person that you were in junior high. Fortunately, the most refreshing part about higher studies is that you are as new as everyone else. You have the opportunity to branch out and make something different of yourself.

2. Do not make your roommate your only best friend

Granted, you may feel closest to your roommate because he or she is the person that you spend the most time with. However, if you seclude yourself, you will not enjoy all of the adventurous experiences that being a college student comes with. The fact that you may change roommates after a semester or two should motivate you to interact, make friends and find others who you may share common values with.

3. Go to class

Needless to say, getting an education is the purpose of attending college. However, one too many times, it is tempting to sleep in and skip that 8 am class. Avoid such temptations at all costs. By attending all of your classes, you will properly learn the material and avoid missing out on any vital information.

4. Develop a relationship with your academic adviser

An academic adviser is a key resource throughout college. He or she will assist you with your courses and can advise you on the courses you should drop and which ones you should take. You have the option of requesting the adviser that you are most comfortable with.

5. Get involved

When you are a new student, it is only normal to be homesick and feel like you do not belong. However, you should always find ways to fit in, make new friends and learn new skills. For instance, you can join a select group, club or sorority. Getting involved will also get you through your last college year.

6. Do not procrastinate, prioritize

While taking the time to make a vital decision might have been common in high school, campus offers a whole different ball game. In order to succeed, everything has to have a deadline. Finish that project early and hand in all assignments on time.

Attending college is about enjoying your hard work and laying a foundation for a successful future career. Take advantage of these strategies and you will not experience any challenge.

In order to get ahead in college, you should commit to these top strategies. Share this post on your Facebook and other social media pages in order to make a difference in the life of any college student.
