Doing something for the first time can be intimidating but not impossible. You’ll need to consider what steps to take and how you want to approach your situation before beginning the project. This is how to set up an Ethernet connection by yourself.
Finding the Modem
You won’t need to worry about a router because you need them only for Wi-Fi internet hookups, and that process is separate from this one. The modem should be the main thing you focus on. Look on the back end of the modem, and there should be several ports that all look familiar.
Locate the Ethernet plugin on the back end of your tower or the side of your laptop. It should have the same fitting as the end of the Ethernet cable itself. Plug this end into your computer.
Locating Your Ports
When you’re looking for the port, you need to find one labeled as Ethernet or highlighted in a specific color to tell you that it’s the leading line hookup. Go ahead and plug the opposite end into your modem. This will remain plugged in at all times, even if your internet service is on the fritz. That is unless you’re replacing your cable altogether or have to terminate the cable at some point.
Connect With PC
You will want to go into your control panel under the settings on your computer. Then, you’ll look for LAN (Local Area Network) Settings. Once opened, you should see a tab for Ethernet; select it. You will then see the Ethernet connection and the name of the connection or the service provider. Then, it should tell you whether it’s connected or not. And thus, your setup is complete.
Connect to Wi-Fi
You will have a modem connection established through your internet service provider. Your Ethernet cable will connect the modem directly to your computer. So you should have a cable wired from the first port of the modem into the computer you’re using.
Once you have oriented the router to the Ethernet cables, then you should have established the hardwiring of the Wi-Fi connection. You will then need to go into settings, just as you did before when you established the modem connection, and check under your local area network settings to see if your Wi-Fi works properly. You can also check the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, and there should be an icon present that tells you whether it’s connected or not.
If you run into the problem where it says your internet isn’t working, it could be a few things. The first thing is you will want to unplug your modem and reset everything. After you hook it back up, you’ll need to wait a few minutes to allow it to reset properly. If the icons come up and it says you’re connected, then you’re good. If not, then you’ll need to try unhooking your Ethernet cable and hooking it back up.
If this doesn’t work, try the other ports in case you have a faulty port. If it’s still not working after you’ve tried that, then you’ll need to use a different Ethernet cable altogether. Once you do this and it connects, then you’ll know that it was the cable.
Now that you know how to set up an Ethernet connection by yourself, it should be easy to work with from here on out.
