College can get lonely, especially if you live alone.

Moving out of the dorms means no longer living just down the hall from your friends.

-------------------------------------

Long nights studying in your apartment can get tiresome and dull quickly. Many of us are still isolated after the pandemic; mental health has plummeted due to the seclusion many of us experience.

For this reason, many college students choose to adopt pets to keep themselves company. Cats are a popular choice due to their independent natures; dogs are a great choice if you aren’t a cat person due to allergies or other concerns.

Dogs with lower energy requirements will be easier to fit into a busy school schedule—for example, breeds like German shepherds require lots of activity, so they may not be the best fit. For these reasons, schnauzers can be the perfect addition to college life.

Here are a few things to know when adopting a schnauzer.

They’re Ratters

Schnauzers originated in Germany in the fourteenth century as hunting and ratting dogs. Like barn cats, owners prized them for their ability to hunt down, corner, and kill rats that could steal a family’s food or infect them with disease.

Modern schnauzers will still hunt down rodents if one makes its way into their home, so be sure to keep them separate if you also have hamsters or mice. Many schnauzers play by shaking their toys aggressively, just as they would with a caught rat.

There Are Different Sizes

Many people are most familiar with miniature schnauzers, but did you know there are other sizes of the breed? Standard schnauzers are the oldest of the breed, with miniature and giant schnauzers bred selectively from them.

Standard schnauzers usually weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and are between 17.5 and 19.5 inches tall. Giant schnauzers look like their smaller counterparts but can weigh as much as 95 pounds! On average, they stand between 23.5 and 27.5 inches tall and weigh between 55 and 85 pounds.

These big boys are just as clever as their little brethren, though they’ll definitely need a bigger doggy bed! Miniature schnauzers are the littlest of the bunch. These spunky little guys have plenty of personality to make up for their small stature!

Miniature schnauzers weigh between 11 and 20 pounds and are between 12 and 14 inches tall.

You Need To Groom Them

Schnauzers have a fluffy double coat, so they’ll need a bit more care to keep them looking their best. You’ll need to brush them every few days to keep their fur from tangling.

Be especially mindful of burrs and other sharp seeds—their fluffy legs make it especially easy to get painful burrs matted into their fur, which you may have to cut out! It’s best to inspect their fur briefly after letting them run around in any grass where burrs may be lurking.

To keep their distinctive schnauzer cut, take them to a reputable grooming service every six months. These regular haircuts will help them always look their best!

While a bit higher maintenance than other breeds, schnauzers are wonderful, friendly, intelligent dogs that will always brighten your day.

Adopting a schnauzer is a great way to boost your mood and ward off loneliness—you’ll smile every time you hear their chipper little paws clicking around the corner.
