One of the most sought after positions offered through colleges offers little or no pay, but plenty of recognition. Yes, I’m talking about internships those special programs offered through schools that will give you some extra work, not a whole lot of money, but could end up being the best decision you’ve made in your young life.
Internships are, more often than not, off campus employment opportunities which allow you to work for a private or public company or for a nonprofit organization. Some students frown upon them because the extra work for little or no pay is a turn off, but having that mindset is counter productive and can lead them to missing a valuable educational opportunity.
The Benefits of Accepting an Internships
There are many benefits to taking an internship including:
Learn Valuable Skills – Hit it right and you’ll land an internship that will teach you new things, skills that can only be acquired from on the job training. Those lessons you learned while in class could only take you so far, now you have the chance to learn and apply new skills to a job in the working world.
Meet New People – Spending years at college will help you polish your social skills, but you still need to connect with people who are in the workforce. Lots of companies use the intern process to screen future employees. If you are a successful intern, you increase the chances that you’ll be offered a position post graduation.
Build Your Resume – Whether offered a position or not or whether you accept a job offer or not, the time you spent working as an intern is a great way to build a resume. Many grads lack one thing when they seek to land a full time job: relevant skills. With an internship behind you, you already possess some skills that many new students lack.
Make Some Money – Generally, internship opportunities aren’t particularly good paying unless you’re an accounting student and manage to land a summer gig at a Wall Street brokerage house. Some students make enough money in a summer internship to pay the following school year’s tuition while others are happy to take advantage of an opportunity offered to few other students with little recompense offered.
Get College Credit – If it can be worked out, you’ll want to see if your internship will yield valuable college credits for you. Every school handles internships according to their own policies, but quite a few will offer to you credit for your work experience. You may have to submit a paper or provide some sort of documentation, but earning three credits or more for work could be the real deal.
Internships, particularly in some fields can be difficult to land, so consult your college’s career center for advice and direction. Who knows, but an internship could help place you into a great job or it could even point you in a fresh direction.
