College Football: Round Two

-------------------------------------

If you were able to take in at least some of the major college football action this past holiday weekend, you were treated to a number of upsets, close calls and a handful of unexpected blow outs. Kudos to the Brigham Young Cougars for knocking off the Oklahoma Sooners as well as for the Navy Midshipmen who played their hearts out against the Ohio State Buckeyes before falling, 31-26. The Cincinnati Bearcats quickly established themselves at the Big East team to beat when they rolled over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 47-15 on the road.

college footballThis weekend will offer a full complement of games as those teams which decided to wait a week to get their season started will be in action. The fun begins with tonight’s tilt featuring the Clemson Tigers at the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets; both teams tuned up for their match by whacking lesser opponents.

Just One Top 25 Battle

The schedule makers were kind to the Top 25 teams for the second week of the season, offering just one Top 25 match up when the No. 3 USC Trojans takes on the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes may be at home, but they’ll be playing one of the most talented teams in the nation when their California nemesis comes knocking. While OSU was being tied down by Navy last weekend, USC demolished San Jose State, 56-3. If an SEC school doesn’t win the national championship this year than USC probably will especially if they beat up on the Buckeyes on the road.

The lack of Top 25 contests seems odd, but then again schedules are made several years in advance therefore what would might have been a key meeting isn’t. Then again, where teams are ranked at this point in the season is usually far removed where they’ll be come November. I’m sure that there is a sleeper team out there who isn’t yet ranked, but may end up proving to be BCS bound come December.

Second Week Predictions

There are too many games being played to offer our take on who will win each contest, but some of the teams we think will win include the following: Georgia Tech, North Carolina Tarheels, Brigham Young, Texas Longhorns, TCU Horned Frogs (season opener), Michigan Wolverines over No. 18 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, UCLA Bruins, South Carolina Gamecocks over No. 21 Georgia Bulldogs and the Utah Utes.
