Key Conference Tilts Highlight This Weekend’s Action

-------------------------------------

Forget about games between Top 25 teams for a moment. When it comes to conference play, some of the best action is between schools which aren’t ranked. Heck, even a pair of winless teams battling to stay out of the conference cellar can sometimes be fun to watch!

college footballAfter last weekend’s match between Florida and LSU, everything else pales in comparison this weekend. Then again, for Fighting Irish fans who are desperate for their team to regain their national notoriety, a win at home against #6 USC would go far.

Let’s take a look at what’s hot in conference play this weekend:

ACC – Is Virginia Tech for real? If they can beat #19 Georgia Tech on the road, then they will make a legitimate case for being a top BCS pick despite losing to Alabama in the first game of the season. I expect that this game will be tight to the very end with the Yellow Jackets giving no ground.

Big 12 – With five league teams in the Top 25, weekly action in the Big 12 is always interesting. One of the best games of the year will be played on Saturday when #20 Oklahoma does battle with #3 Texas at high noon (ET). The Sooners may be the best 3-2 team in the nation and if they lose they’ll become the best 3-3 team. Unranked Missouri (4-1) travels to Stillwater this Saturday to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys. This game should be a dandy.

Big East – Last night’s match between Cincinnati and South Florida may end up being the Big East game of the year. Then again, West Virginia may claim otherwise. Tonight’s tilt between Pittsburgh and Rutgers is a grudge match with Pitt trying to shake off four straight losses to the Scarlet Knights while RU works to prove that it has put its opening game blow out to Cincinnati behind it.

Big Ten – Are the Hawkeyes really that good to warrant a #11 ranking? We’ll find out this weekend when Iowa takes on a good Wisconsin team on the road. Win with finesse and the November 14th Iowa-Ohio State game could become the Big Ten game of the year.

Pac 10 –  Stanford at Arizona is the best match up between Pac 10 teams this Saturday, but most eyes will be on the Trojans-Irish game. #13 Oregon is idle this weekend.

SEC – When will #1 Florida play #2 Alabama? Well, that game isn’t scheduled this year. Instead, if both teams run the table, they’ll match up in the SEC Championship Game on December 5th in Atlanta. This weekend Arkansas visits Florida while #22 South Carolina will battle Alabama at night.

Best of the Rest – WAC conference leader Boise State had a scare Wednesday night, pulling out a late win against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes of Conference USA. Central Florida hosts Miami in a game that on paper shouldn’t be close – we’ll see. Central Michigan is at Western Michigan for a key MAC battle while a pair of improved teams, Temple and Army meet in Philadelphia.

Enjoy your favorite mid-October games this weekend and bundle up…cold, wet weather is now a factor for fans who hit the stands.
