What Your Community College Has To Offer

What Your Community College Has To Offer
  • Opening Intro -

If you currently attend or are planning to attend community college, then you're joining millions of other students across the United States that have discovered a great way to start their higher education.

-------------------------------------

What two-year colleges offer to career-minded students.

Community colleges are sometimes known as technical colleges and are in effect “junior colleges” given their typical two-year course of study. Attending community college can be right for you and for the following five reasons:

1. Open Admissions — Most community colleges offer open enrollment, enabling any high school graduate or person possessing a GED to attend college. Community colleges provide an easier path to higher education, while still providing the academic rigor students need to learn and to advance. You may not be required to sit for an SAT exam to gain admittance.

2. Curriculum Variety — Community college students may find a great variety of course offerings ranging from dental hygienist and automotive mechanics to nursing and business administration. Such schools offer certificates or diplomas for as little as three months of study to an associate degree. Some schools now offer four-year degrees, making college more accessible and affordable across the board.

3. Test the Waters — For some high school grads not certain of what courses they want to take, community college is the perfect place for them to test the waters to discover their interests. Such schools typically offer extensive support to ensure a student’s success including career guidance, assessment tests and a career roadmap.

4. Lower Costs — Tuition and related college costs are typically much lower at community colleges, even far lower than at public four-year colleges. Community and technical colleges are designed to make college affordable for students, opening up educational possibilities that might not be available otherwise. Such students are eligible for financial assistance such as Pell grants and may qualify for scholarships.

5. Transfer Ease — Community college students who wish to pursue a four-year degree will soon learn that other institutions are willing to accept them as transfer students. Many two-year colleges have made arrangements with four-year colleges to smooth the transfer process, accepting all the credits earned with an associate degree and allowing students to enter these schools as college juniors. Students save money by starting out at two-year schools and then transferring. Many private schools welcome community college transfer students too.

Soaring Enrollment

How popular are community colleges with today’s students? Very much so. As of January 2011, 43 percent of all college undergraduates were enrolled in community colleges reports Business Insider. So, if you’re a community college student or planning to become one, then you’re in good company.
