    Billions of dollars in college scholarship monies are awarded every academic year, money that you may be missing out on.

The following are some of the recent college scholarships that have come to the attention of SayCampusLife.com. Publishing this information does not constitute an endorsement of any one program and students should follow the links supplied to learn more.

1. Burger King Scholars Program — Fast food purveyor Burger King has awarded more than 17,000 scholarships valued at $17.6 million to high school students, Burger King employees and their children across the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. Scholarship grants range from $1,000 to $50,000 and are funded by the Burger King McLamore Foundation. Students may apply through Jan. 10, 2014.

2. NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards — You have until tomorrow, Dec. 18, 2013, to apply for the NFIB scholarship. This scholarship is for high school students who have started a business and is offered to high school seniors entering an accredited not-for-profit two- or four year college. Over 2,400 students have received awards totaling more than $2.5 million so far.

3. GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program — The GE-Reagan scholarship honors the legacy of America’s 40th president by assisting college-bound students who demonstrate leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. The foundation claims to award “numerous” $10,000 college scholarships annually. It also allows recipients to renew their awards for up to three additional years, saving them up to $40,000 in higher education costs. The deadline for this scholarship is Jan. 9, 2014.

4. National MS Society Scholarship Program — College-bound students with multiple sclerosis have distinct disadvantages as they pursue their higher education. And that is why the National MS Society has a college scholarship program for students who have MS or are children of a parent diagnosed with the disease. Established in 2003, the program awarded more than $1 million to 679 recipients in 2013. The current call for scholarships is open, but it will close on Jan. 15, 2014.

5. Elks National Foundation Scholarships — Local Elks Lodges help support communities across the United States through its charitable services. The organization operates several scholarship programs including its Most Valuable Student Scholarships, what awards 500 four-year scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,500 per year. That deadline has passed, but if you are the child, grandchild or legal ward of a living Elk, then you can also apply for a Legacy Award. These scholarships are for four years and award $1,000 per year to 250 students. You must apply by Jan. 31, 2014, to be eligible.

6. Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) — You can consider this sixth scholarship option an “honorable mention” as it works a bit differently from most other offerings. FIRE is looking for high school juniors or seniors to write and submit an essay ranging from 800 to 1,000 words on the topic of free speech. One $10,000 first prize, one $5,000 second prize, and three $1,000 runner-up prizes will be awarded for the best essays. Four $500 winners will be chosen from the remaining entrants in a drawing. The deadline is Jan. 1, 2014.

7. Varsity Tutors Scholarship Contest — Varsity Tutors holds a monthly $1,000 college scholarship contest where students must write an essay in response to a monthly prompt. Visitors to the Varsity Tutors scholarship webpage are able to vote via social media for submitted entries. The top five entries with the most votes are reviewed by Varsity Tutors at the end of the month and one winner is subsequently chosen to receive the $1,000 college scholarship.
