How To Utilize Humanities Degrees

-------------------------------------

When we think about the top paying college degrees, we usually think about nursing, business administration or computer science. But what about those of us who hold degrees in the humanities in areas such as sociology, English, journalism, philosophy and religious studies? When you have a degree in a humanities-based subject, there are various careers to choose from. It’s a matter of networking with others, creating a solid resume and seeking out creative ways to locate humanities jobs. Here are some ways you can utilize a humanities degree after graduation.

Journalism Degrees

For those with a degree in journalism, the opportunities are endless. Prepare a portfolio of the writing samples you’ve done over the years and mail the portfolio along with your resume and cover letter to local newspapers and independent magazines in your area. If you want to work in radio broadcasting you’ll need to prepare some demo tapes and mail them to different radio stations. Freelancing is a neat option if you want to set your own hours and work for yourself. Get a website and on the site advertise your services to potential clients.

Art History Degrees

If your degree is in art history, you can pursue a masters degree in the same subject and work as an adjunct professor at a two-year college. If you don’t want to pursue an advanced degree there are other options. You can secure work at local museums as an administrator or you can teach at secondary schools. Another option is to be an advisor at nonprofit arts organizations.

Sociology Majors

Sociology majors have abundant career options. You can get hired as a caseworker at local social service agencies that provide food, housing, or counseling to needy families in your city. If you enjoy working with children and teens consider working with mentoring organizations as an administrator or volunteer coordinator. Another idea is to work in a religious setting since faith based organizations are also a good source of employment for sociology majors.

Performing Arts Majors

For the performing arts majors, you might have to work harder to get your foot in the door but it’s possible. Research the latest auditions and find out what the judges are looking for in those who will audition for them. If it’s a dance audition you want to develop some dance routines and practice daily in the weeks leading to the audition. In conclusion, your humanities degree doesn’t have to go to waste if you put in the effort to locate good paying jobs in this field.
