Keep Your Budget in Check by Engaging in Free Activities

Keep Your Budget in Check by Engaging in Free Activities
  • Opening Intro -

As a college student you know the importance of keeping your finances under control, but you also enjoy hanging out with friends and relaxing after a long day of classes and studying in the dorm.

One of the best ways to be financially savvy in college is to do free activities. Here are a few you should try.

Library Visits

Going to the library is not just for checking out books that pertain to your classes. At the library you’ll find fun things to read such as cookbooks, vintage magazines, articles from old newspapers and DVDs of your favorite movies. All you need is a library card and it’s free to get. Libraries also have free seminars and classes that help you in all areas of life such as parenting, career planning, applying for loans, dating and sewing. This is especially a good idea for weekends.

Concerts at Parks

Depending on the city you live in, you can attend some free concerts at public parks in the area. The good thing about these concerts is that you might hear local and independent bands that you haven’t heard of before and you may develop your musical preferences as a result. Bring some light healthy snacks with you to the concert and if it’s summer or spring, be sure to drink plenty of water.

Volunteer At Fun Events

This is a good way to enjoy yourself and give back at the same time. If a local nonprofit organization is holding an all-day bake sale to raise money for their soup kitchen, be a part of the event. You get to sample a variety of baked goods for free and you can meet some interesting people. If you’re good at baking, inquire about contributing your homemade treats to the fundraiser.

Get Crafty At Home

If you have an abundance of sewing supplies at home, you can use the weekend to make beautiful crafts. Some good things to create are gloves, homemade T shirts, shopping bags, repurposed tennis shoes and homemade scarves. Many of these crafts don’t take a lot of time to make but there are others that are more time consuming. When you create useful things you save money on getting clothes and decorations from the store.

Free activities don’t have to be boring if you look in the right places and keep an open mind. Some of these activities can lead to new hobbies or even the doors to a new career.
