How to Cut Costs as a Traveling College Athlete

How to Cut Costs as a Traveling College Athlete
  • Opening Intro -

Going away on an athletic trip is exciting for any student, especially the college athlete.

Going to a new place, fighting a new team, and getting to know your teammates better is all part of the fun.

-------------------------------------

But it’s easy to think of this venture as more of a vacation than a business trip and overspend. In addition, you have long travel delays and grades and tuition to worry about. Here are a few tips to reduce stress and save money during your travel.

Transportation

If you travel with the team, chances are, the school has rented a bus for you all, or provided some kind of airfare for the majority of the journey. Renting a car is the most convenient method of travel once there, but if you want to save money, convenience is not an option. Look into public transportation options before arriving at the destination.

Having insurance is the most basic form of protection. And you can find traveler’s insurance and other options just for student athletes who need coverage while on the road.

Social Outings

Money for social outings is the biggest expense for many college students. You are not on an official trip as a traveling college athlete. It’s not recommended that you splurge on social outings like restaurant meals and sightseeing trips. Cutting out social events altogether could reduce your overall trip costs by half. Some of it your team or school might also pay for, so take advantage of those opportunities.

Travel Dates and Times

There are certain dates and times when travel costs are low. Review the wide range of savings that are offered by different airlines, hotels, and rental companies. Some companies offer discounts during the busiest travel times of the year, which are the summer, Spring and Christmas seasons. Some businesses reduce their prices at specific times of the day. Ask about using these and working around your class schedule to make things more convenient and less expensive for you on a whole.

Discounts

On travel comparison sites, compare the large selections of vacation discounts and packages, including all-inclusive deals. Customize your search by age, location, and time of year. In addition to credit card companies, some airlines, hotels, and other businesses provide discounts to college students. Start your research on discounts at least several weeks before the trip.

Group Travel

Save by allowing your family or friends to join your trip. Ask them to share the costs of food, lodging and transportation. While you are training as an athlete, your travel companions can go their separate ways and enjoy the trip on their own.

As a college student, thinking cheap is necessary to travel well. You have additional expenses like gym fees and baggage for your equipment. No matter where plan to travel, find a variety of ways to cut costs and enjoy your trip.
