Everyone deals with tense driving situations from time to time, and sometimes this results in accidents or traffic violations. If you’re considered a high-risk driver—or if you just want to become a better driver in general—check out these tips for how to improve your driving skills.
Practice Makes Perfect
Everyone practices driving when they’re new to the road, but practicing can still be beneficial even when you’ve had a license for years.
Empty lots are perfect for practicing difficult turns or parallel parking, and slower residential or dead-end streets are good for just spending time behind the wheel.
Be sure to practice in multiple vehicles so that you get a feel for different car types. It’s also a good idea to drive in different terrains and weather patterns—driving on a paved road in the summer is completely different from driving on an icy gravel road in the winter.
Stick to the Basics
As simple as it seems, getting back to the basics of driving can greatly improve your skills.
We tend to lose a lot of good driving habits over time, so remember to use your turn signal and to double-check your mirrors.
Brushing up on street signs and other driving test questions can also be helpful. A refresher course is a good way to improve your driving skills and make sure you’re still doing all the things that make you a safe driver.
Avoid Distractions
Everyone knows texting and driving is a bad idea, but many other distractions can make you an unsafe driver. Even if you don’t text, messing with your phone while you’re on the road is still a bad idea. Avoid taking calls unless absolutely necessary.
Look at what route you want to take ahead of time so that you don’t have to rely on a map or navigation apps. Other distractions to avoid include eating on the road or driving while you’re tired. Give yourself time to stop and sit down for meals or other breaks. This will keep you refreshed and alert while you’re on the road.
other valuable tips:
Get to Know Your Car
The more comfortable you are with your car, the more comfortable you’ll be on the road. Make sure you know how to work the wipers, headlights, stereo, and all the other gadgets in your car. Take a moment every now and then to make sure your seat, steering wheel, and mirrors are all adjusted exactly how you want them.
Customizing your car with knick-knacks, seat covers, and whatever else you want will help the space feel like yours. Feeling at home in the driver’s seat is key to keeping calm in even the worst driving situations.
