  • Opening Intro -

Choosing a major can be hard. Maybe you’ve always known what you’ve wanted to do with your life. That’s great.

But what about the people who don’t have a clue?

You don’t have to have it figured out before you head to college– you’ll have time to pick out your major while you’re on campus. You can even change your major later if you change your mind.

1. Do some self-evaluation

What do you like to do? This is a good place to start when thinking about a major. If you major in a field that deals with something you like to do, you’ll enjoy your career much more.

Some students pick majors based on cultural or financial obligations back home. Talk to your family members and ask for their input. You may also want to do some research on well-paying jobs.

Some people don’t mind if their profession doesn’t make a huge salary every year, but it’s important to a lot of people. Maybe you’ll pick your major based on finances.

2. List 10 things that you love

Make a list of ten things you love. It doesn’t have to be academic; it can be hobbies or something you like doing after a day of school. Looking at a list of what you like to do can give you ideas about what you may want to choose as a career.

3. List your strengths and weaknesses

Write a list of your strengths. Then write a list of your weaknesses. This can help you choose a major. Do you hate math? You probably shouldn’t study statistics or accounting then. Do you like being creative? Then maybe becoming a graphic designer is a better career choice for you.

4. Visit your school’s career center

If you’re still in high school, ask an advisor, teacher or other adults about career choices. They may have resources to help you. Some high schools may have a specific person who prepares students for college– they can definitely help you out. You can take a test to see what majors would best suit you.

If you’re already in college, visit your career center. They can help you create resumes, portfolios, and more. If you’re looking to pick the major that’s right for you, they have similar tests you can take to choose the right path.

5. You can always change your major

Some colleges will make you sign a major at a certain point in your college career. If you have so many credits, you will be required to sign a major. Sometimes, this pressures students into choosing a major they don’t really like.

Whatever you do, just remember that you can always change your major. It may set your graduation date back if you switch your major too many times, but just know that you can always change your major if you are not happy with it.

It’s hard to pick the perfect major sometimes. You’re making one of the most significant decisions of your life when you choose it. But don’t worry, it will all work out in the end. Don’t forget to share with your friends– they may be struggling to pick a major too.
