How to Choose the Perfect Major

How to Choose the Perfect Major
  • Opening Intro -

It can be hard trying to choose what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Some of us are lucky and always know what we want to do, but for the majority of us, we have no idea.

Choosing a college major can be a daunting time and it can be so confusing with so much choice. If you are really struggling to choose a major that is right for you, check out these tips to try and narrow down the major that is perfect for you.

Finding What You Love

If you are totally unsure of what career you want to go into but you love a certain subject, it may be worth taking that subject as your college major and working out what job you’d like further on down the line. If you love what you are doing, you will be good at it and want to stick with whatever role you end up in, as you will be doing something around the subject you enjoy. Even if you end up going into a different career, enjoying your time at college and getting good grades will look good to any employer.

Earning Potential

This is a big decision maker for many when choosing what college major to apply for. When you are looking at majors, you want to know what jobs it could lead to, if the subject will be interesting, and what you will be paid in your future career.

College is a big investment and we want to come out of it knowing we have the chance at a secure job with good money. Check out Job Descriptions for jobs related to your degree but remember, if it is something you are going to do for the rest of your life, no matter what the salary, you need to enjoy it somewhat.

Test the Waters

Before you make a choice, you can attend open days and classes to see if you are likely to enjoy the subject and the career it will take you into. Choosing a major that will train you for a specific career such as nursing is something that should be seriously considered, as some degrees are more open to jobs than others.

If you take a major in nursing, you will be a nurse when you qualify, whereas if you take a business major, you could work in all kinds of administrative or managerial roles. Read the syllabus and what the classes entail and talk to other students taking the major. You need to be prepared for the coursework that may be required to pass and get to the career you have been dreaming of.

Whatever you choose to do, do it well and make the most of your college experience. If you find out the major isn’t all you had dreamed it was, speak to your lecturer and they may be able to help you change courses or support you to understand the coursework better. Good luck in college and chase the career of your dreams.
