Ways To Improve University Lab Productivity
  • Opening Intro -

You want to see your laboratory sciences students succeed and have productive class sessions.

However, there may be some factors getting in the way of that.

-------------------------------------

If you notice a decreased work rate in your lab classroom, here are some ways to improve university lab productivity that you can try.

Promote Good Workflow and Organization

First and foremost, the most helpful thing for keeping your university lab productive is to stay organized. During the first few days of instruction, you should let students familiarize themselves with where lab equipment is located.

Set up the lab before each session to feature the materials your students will be working with for easy access. Also, the lab room itself should have a good workflow.

For example, there should be ample space between desks and workstations for moving around and avoiding collisions. Workflow is important for any lab, whether it is university or professional level.

Don’t Allow Food and Drink

There are several reasons not to allow students to bring food and drinks into your lab space. One is for safety—lab chemicals and other materials can contaminate any open food or drink.

On top of this, food and drinks can spill and leave messes that your students will need to clean up, resulting in them pausing their lab time. Only ever allow water bottles that can be fastened closed, and these should only be used before lab time and after cleanup.

Minimize Distractions

It’s nearly impossible to completely cut out distraction from your lab space, especially on a bustling college campus. For group projects, labs are a place of collaboration, so promoting a quiet work environment isn’t always possible either.

What you can do is keep doors and windows closed (unless your lab or certain materials require ventilation) to prevent outside noise. Encourage students to leave their cell phones in their bookbags unless they need to research something quickly. After all, most of the answers they are looking for will be provided in text and lab books.

Also make sure that your lab’s equipment is well-maintained and up to date. Students may struggle using old equipment that doesn’t work as it should, resulting in lost time and productivity. This is just one of several benefits of using updated lab equipment.

Set Goals

University lab time should be structured similarly to a professional setting, but with an educational emphasis. Make sure to set a goal for your students to strive for by the end of every lab session.
