Having a naturally grown field requires more labor-intensive needs to maintain the overall aesthetic than synthetic turf. Use our tips for maintaining your school’s football field and keep it in good condition for when fall sports start up again.
Test the Field Soil
First, you need to test your field’s soil. Determining the best possible grass for the area depends on the type of region and climate the school is located. Be sure to test the native soil of your fields every three years or every year if the fields use sand-based soil.
When you test the soil, a lab will look at the pH levels and minerals present in the soil. Knowing these levels can help you adapt your maintenance methods to keep your grass healthy and lush for the season.
Know When and How To Mow
To keep your sports fields in good condition, you must maintain the area year-round. This is especially important for schools that don’t experience winter weather conditions.
Never mow the field beyond where newly cut grass can blend in. You want the field to combine with the surrounding vegetation for the aesthetic.
Set the lawnmower blade about two inches above the ground when games are still occurring during warmer months and three inches above the ground during the off-season for the optimal field grass length.
Aerate the Field
With multiple athletes trampling over the grass, the field will experience constant wear and tear. Consistent play and mowing can cause the soil to compact and create bald spots within the grass.
Properly aerate the football field to reduce soil compacting so the grass will have better air exchange and promote deep root development.
Fertilize the Grass
That soil test we mentioned before also plays a critical role in determining what fertilizer is best for the field. Generally, a sports field loves nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
However, the soil test will help you better understand what elements the area needs to flourish. Ensure that you fertilize the grass when it is actively growing so it experiences the most benefits possible.

Touch Up Paint Lines
You will want to diligently touch up the paint lines with a field paint sprayer during the season. Having crisp, clean lines makes the field more aesthetically pleasing. If you let the paint fade too much, it can make it difficult for players and refs to play on the field properly.
Once you get the hang of properly maintaining your school’s football field, it will become easier year after year. Follow these tips and watch the field flourish. Give your athletes the gift of playing on a well-cared-for field.
