Test the Field Soil
First, you need to test your field’s soil. Determining the best possible grass for the area depends on the type of region and climate the school is located. Be sure to test the native soil of your fields every three years or every year if the fields use sand-based soil.
When you test the soil, a lab will look at the pH levels and minerals present in the soil. Knowing these levels can help you adapt your maintenance methods to keep your grass healthy and lush for the season.
Know When and How To Mow
To keep your sports fields in good condition, you must maintain the area year-round. This is especially important for schools that don’t experience winter weather conditions.
Never mow the field beyond where newly cut grass can blend in. You want the field to combine with the surrounding vegetation for the aesthetic.
Set the lawnmower blade about two inches above the ground when games are still occurring during warmer months and three inches above the ground during the off-season for the optimal field grass length.
Aerate the Field

Fertilize the Grass

However, the soil test will help you better understand what elements the area needs to flourish. Ensure that you fertilize the grass when it is actively growing so it experiences the most benefits possible.
