These days, competition from the immigrant community and older workers is making it especially tough to find work.
Some graduates are taking a closer look at the public sector for employment. The public sector is defined as government jobs, while the private sector is composed of jobs created by the business community. Let’s take a look at the public sector and what it may hold for you.
Municipal Jobs
The most common public-sector jobs are those at the municipal level. Specifically, jobs through your town or city. Every community across America employs people to handle a variety of tasks. And there are many types of jobs available including positions for engineers, transportation and traffic specialists, public health personnel, police and fire personnel, business development managers and in a host of other areas.
Generally, you do not need to reside in the community where the job is located. Visit your area’s town and city websites to review job listings.
Public Education
In most states, jobs in public education are handled at the town or county level. School districts hire teachers, assistants, maintenance personnel, office help and administrators.
Even if you did not graduate college with a teaching degree, but would like to teach, there are programs that will prepare you to teach. There is a special need for math and science teachers. Visit a local job fair or apply directly to the school district.
State Employment
Your state employs many thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people who oversee the state government. At the state level there are a variety of job opportunities and departments where employment can be found such as taxation, public welfare, housing, child development, accounting, health and other areas.
A significant number of jobs are in your state’s capital, but many more jobs are located throughout the state and at the county level.
Federal Jobs
At the federal level, more than 4.3 million people have found employment. Approximately 60 percent hold traditional government jobs with the remainder serving in the US military. The federal government employs people across all job sectors including: taxation, accounting, public health, veterans services, census, engineering, social services and beyond. Job opportunities are advertised on federal government websites as well as on private websites.
Public Sector Jobs
At any given time thousands of jobs are listed on the municipal, state and federal levels. Use a public sector jobs website to help you find what is available today and apply to those jobs that interest you. You may not have considered public sector employment previously, but it is an option that may be worth exploring.
If you do hear back from a government agency, follow the usual steps as you move through the interview process. You may be required to take a test, pass a screening interview on the phone and then consent to an interview in person. Hiring typically takes longer than it does in the private sector as government agencies must keep job listings open long enough for others to apply.
