Firstly, one in three college students will eventually transfer according to a report from the National Student Clearinghouse. Secondly, some students will drop out, but if you’re intent on finishing college, you’ll likely find a way to complete your education.
There are a number of reasons why a student would consider transferring from their first choice college to a new school. The reasons vary, but for students seeking to be educated elsewhere, the possibilities are there.
1. Dissatisfaction with your college. It happens: some students are simply not happy with their college choice. Those reasons may have to do with the college setting, campus safety, class availability, insufficient socialization opportunities and more. If you cannot remedy the problem, you may fight yourself added to the number of students the National Student Clearinghouse says will transfer.
2. Financial matters. You may be entirely happy with your college choice, but unfortunately financial concerns are weighing in. You’ve completed the FAFSA, inquired about a federal Pell grant, but still find yourself financially strapped. Like many students attending a four-year college, you choose to transfer to a community college in a bid to conserve your scant resources.
3. Family matters. You are homesick and thought that it would pass. Or, there are problems back home and you believe that you would succeed better at college if you could be closer to your family. Consider an emergency absence instead of a college transfer if you believe that you will be needed at home for a few weeks and not long term.
4. You changed your major. You want to change your major, but your current college does not offer a degree in Zoology. Without the right degree available, your stay at your current college becomes untenable. It is time for you to explore your options, apply and get accepted to a new college, and put in for a transfer.
5. You’ve completed your degree. If you are currently enrolled at a community, technical or other two-year college, and have finished your studies, you may want to transfer to a four-year college or university to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Today’s community college students are finding that the transfer is a smooth one and, as noted by the New York Times, some students are able to get into more selective colleges.

When you’re weighing your college transfer options, you will want to ensure that as many college credits you have already taken will transfer. Save time and money by carefully weighing your educational options before putting in for a transfer.
