So naturally, many freshman today decide to live with their friends from high school their first year of college – but honestly that is a huge mistake. If you choose to live with a friend, you do not get the full college experience.
One of the best experiences a college student can have is to make new friends. When you graduate high school you are supposed to leave a chapter of your life behind you and embark on a new journey that is called college.
Here are 3 ways to become best friends with your roommate:
1. Use a roommate compatibility test before deciding to room together.
Most colleges give students the option to fill out a questionnaire on what activities they enjoy and what interests them. Taking one of these tests and answering them honestly is a great way to meet a potential roommate. This questionnaire allows you to learn and know about your roommate before you even move in, which is a huge plus.
This will give you the ability to learn what kind of person they are and whether or not you will get along rooming together.
2. Invite them out to lunch at the dining hall.
Most friendships in college come in the dining hall because lets be honest, no one wants to eat alone. Inviting your roommate out to eat in the dining hall will not only allow the two of you to become closer, but it will also give you the chance to make more friends throughout the college.
3. Give them their own space.
Most roommates try to force themselves onto their roommate and try to be with them 24/7, and that can prevent a potential friendship from forming. Learning that you both are going to have your own lives with homework, clubs, sports, and friends, you are going to realize that you can not be with each other every second of every day.
College is a time of new beginnings and having a roommate is a vital part to your success in college. If you do not become friends with your roommate, your living experience will not be enjoyable, and neither will your overall college experience. However, if you befriend your roommate, it will enhance your overall college experience. Enjoy it because it flies by at the blink of an eye.
