The decision to homeschool brings with it the need for great commitment and focus, but can also provide great satisfaction as well. With the variety of resources now available on the internet, a lot of the hard work involved in homeschooling has been lightened.

Many parents prefer to set up curricula, select textbooks, and decide on “class-room” procedures by themselves. But for others, online homeschooling programs can provide further structure and support. Online programs are available for homeschooling children from kindergarten through high school. Sometimes called “umbrella schools” or “distance learning”, they come in many forms and provide a variety of services.

One of their primary benefits is supplying a legal structure for parents under which to homeschool in confidence. They can also supply some or most of the instruction required on a daily basis, making them a good choice for parents with many other time constraints. Here are some of the best to choose from.

DEAC Programs

The Distance Education Accrediting Commission has identified some online homeschooling programs as worthy of accreditation. Basically, the DEAC certifies that programs such as those offered through Allied National High School, or the Milburn Academy meet the standards set for public education. DEAC programs have access to financial-aid money for students as well. Homeschooling parents planning on sending their children to competitive universities may find that these programs provide the rigor they are seeking.

Correspondence Schools

Online programs such as American School and the International Baccalaureate Organization require less teaching on the part of the parent, just more supervision. Correspondence schools employ teachers who prepare lesson materials and mail them to students. When the assignments are done, they are submitted and graded by the teacher. This is perfect for students who need a home environment to learn in, but maybe don’t have parents qualified enough to teach.

Online Schools

As their name implies, online schools are completely digital. All assignments are received, carried out, submitted, and evaluated electronically. Programs such as eTutor expect the student to carry out all work online. Parents are able to access the student’s report card online as well, and can help them keep track of online assignments.

Flexible Programs

Some parents prefer less structure and more spontaneous learning for their children. “Unschooling” is a popular alternative to traditional curriculum-based programs. There are a number of online flexible programs available, some without charge. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), for example, has put online a wealth of teaching materials in its OpenCourseWare program.

Online homeschooling programs vary in rigor as well as expense, so parents need to examine their options in this regard. Many US states also offer various forms of online programs for homeschoolers, as do individual school districts in some areas; these can lower the financial obligations, but may also lower the parents’ ability to shape their children’s homeschooling experience.

Make the right decision for your child’s education, and do everything you can to create a good learning environment. Everything from having a managed services in Ottawa keep anti-virus software up-to-date, to shaping a daily schedule is up to you, and keeping your child on track can help them get on the path to success.
