Here are just a few tips for a quicker, healthier recovery.
1. Sleep More
There’s a popular misconception that concussed people should be kept awake, but experts agree this is actually the opposite of how you should treat a concussion. Your brain needs rest to heal, so as long as your doctor has cleared you from any immediate danger, you should feel free to sleep as much as you like.
2. Avoid Physical Activity
It doesn’t have to be strenuous to be bad for you. Your brain is extremely sensitive after a concussion, and even the mildest of sports, games and exercises can be too much for it to handle. Say no to physical activity until your concussion is fully healed.
3. Don’t Ignore Your Symptoms
It’s normal to feel weak, dizzy and nauseous after a concussion, but don’t let yourself become so accustomed to your symptoms that you write them off or think they’re no big deal. Pain is a warning from your body that you need to take it slow. Ignoring your symptoms could lead to a longer recovery time or even another concussion.
4. Test Your Motor Skills
Are you suffering from clumsier hands or slower reaction times since your concussion? There’s a reason why concussed people are told not to drive or operate heavy machinery. Even if you’re desperate to get back behind the wheel, make it a point of testing your motor skills at home before trying to take yourself anywhere else. If you fail the tests, call a cab.
5. Take Baby Steps
Don’t throw yourself back into work like nothing is wrong. Instead, ask your boss if you can work half-days until you’re fully recovered, or see if your supervisor will let you do desk work for a while instead of manual labor. The goal is to ease yourself back into daily life without putting too much stress on your body.
6. Stay Away from Screens
Reading can worsen the symptoms of a concussion, especially if you’re looking at words on a phone, laptop or video game screen. In addition to things like blurred vision painful headaches, you’ll also tax yourself mentally by forcing yourself to focus and concentrate. It may go against everything your third grade teacher ever told you, but after a concussion, reading is not good for you.
7. Prevent Future Concussions
What caused your previous concussion? If it was on the job, talk to your boss about workplace safety. If it happened during a contact sport, look into people like Mary Hayashi. Hayashi and other athletic safety advocates are trying to pass laws about concussions and sports, and you can get a lot of information from their platforms.
These are just a few tips for getting over a concussion. The most important thing is that you don’t feel frustrated or discouraged if your recovery takes a while. Let your brain heal at its own pace, even if that means resting and relaxing more than you usually do; you don’t want to take any chances with head injuries.
