With so many things going on in your life at the same time, how do you balance your academic schedule and social life so you can have a fulfilling and memorable college life? Here are some tips to help you:
Prioritize Your Classes
There’s no doubt that being in college is fun. There lots and lots of opportunities to engage in exciting stuff throughout your freshman year that you will remember for a long time. But since the main reason why you joined college is to study, it’s in your best interest to prioritize your schoolwork. Before making any major decisions, stop for a moment and think how they will impact your studies in the long-term.
For instance, if you have an evening class of let’s say 8-10 pm, and your friends have invited you to a party that starts at 7 pm, it’s easy to give in and find yourself partying all night. After all, who cares whether you miss a class or not? It’s just s single class missed, right?
However, if you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself partying more and missing more classes that will surely affect your overall academic performance. So, make it your responsibility to attend all our classes and complete all your assignments before heading out to have fun with your friends.
Choose Your Friends Wisely
It’s not easy to differentiate between students who are academically-inclined and those who are not from the start. After all, all of you are new. But the more you interact and live together, you’ll get to know those who are serious with their studies and those who aren’t.
If you want to excel in your academic work, surround yourself with disciplined people who have your best interest at heart; like-minded people who not only focus on their schoolwork, but also bring out the best in you. If you don’t, you’re likely to lose focus on your studies and consequently fail. It doesn’t matter how intelligent you think you are.
Designate Time For Your Studies
Unlike high school where you’re required to attend classes the whole day every weekday, college is a bit different. Despite the heavy workload, you’ll find yourself having more free time in your hands. Without proper planning and organization, it is easier to waste time on less important issues like watching TV or posting selfies on social media.
Staying ahead of your class and syllabus requires that you spend more time studying on your own (or in groups). As such, you should designate study times outside your lecture halls (probably in the library, or some quiet place where you can concentrate). Eliminate your phone, snacks and any other thing that might distract you throughout your studies. When you’re done, you can go out and party, or just relax with your friends within the campus.
