These options will make you feel like you have gone on vacation even when you haven’t.
1. Camp Out
Camping in the backyard may seem like something that only little kids do, but it takes on a whole new significance when you’re at college age. Tent becomes party central, and it’s a perfect way to spend time with friends in an exciting and adventurous way without having to travel. You can spend the night under the stars without being too far from the comfort of a roof and a warm bed if the weather turns bad. One night is exciting, but spend two or three and it’s even more like a vacation.
2. Local Attractions
The irony of living nearby to great attractions is that we often spend all of our time visiting places far away and miss what’s close to home. Try visiting the attractions in your local area. This can be either close to your family home, or near to your college campus. The more things you can see for free, the better. Some places also have discounts for locals. Think about options like museums and art galleries, parks, natural formations such as hills or mountains, and so on. Arrange your own local tour!
3. Theme Your Room
Want to go to a Caribbean island without spending the money to get there? Bring the Caribbean to your own home. Deck out your room in inflatable palm trees and floral wreaths, and sip some cocktails with your friends. You can even find an ‘islands sounds’ recording to make it sound like you are sitting on the beach! If it’s warm enough, lounge around in bikinis and trunks on your beach towels to complete the illusion.
4. Tour the World
If you can’t go to a place, you can at least watch it from afar. Arrange an international film festival with your friends: each person who attends can bring a DVD or a downloaded movie from a different country. Try touring as many countries in the world as you can during your festival – if a day feels too short, spread it out over a whole week! Make sure to have snacks on hand, and have half an hour or so to discuss the movies after each one finishes.
5. Disconnect
Remember the horror of going abroad and finding out that there’s no WiFi? Well, you wouldn’t be on vacation if you had easy access to your phone and the internet. Try turning everything off for a few days! You can even restrict yourself from other activities like watching TV to make sure that you relax and engage in normal vacation activities instead. Try to find alternatives close to home. Would you normally laze around by the pool on vacation? Then go to your local swimming pool for a few hours! You can recreate that vacation experience easily without having to spend much money at all.
While you may not like the idea of a “staycation” at first – after all, it’s not quite as exciting as travelling – these options will definitely allow you to experience a vacation without a huge budget. The important thing is to relax and have that feeling of being away from everything for a short while. No work allowed!
