Despite that, a surprisingly large number of those people end up having significant problems adapting to the “real world” after that experience is over, and often feel like they’ve actually wasted their time there. How do you avoid that, and what should you do that others might be missing out on?
Build Your Social Network
This is probably one of the most common pieces of advice you’ll get when you ask the above question, and it might feel like a bit of a cliché, but for a good reason – it’s an extremely important point. This isn’t just about making yourself feel better through having a network of people to rely on, but it will set you up for your future career on an equally important level as your classes. When you start looking for a job later on, being recognized at the places you apply to will make a huge difference – provided, of course, that the recognition is a positive one.
Explore Yourself
Now is the best time of your life to just kick back and think outside the box for a few seconds. You have a huge opportunity to explore what really makes you tick, all those interests that strike your fancy that you’ve been thinking about since high school. Want to make a game? Go for it! Thought about testing yourself in front of a microphone? You’d be surprised how many rappers with degrees there are out there!
The important thing is to seek out activities that motivate and engage you, and nurture them outside of your regular college activities. If you can end your education with several active hobbies developed throughout it, that will make a huge difference in your profile, and will really set you aside from other people in your work field.
Plan Ahead
Don’t forget to take the time and think a little about what’s coming up ahead of you as well. There will be many obstacles for you to overcome, and it’s important that you tackle them with an educated approach, instead of having to research everything on the go as it pops up. Think about what kind of career path you’d like to follow, where your skills would work best, and whether you want to remain in the same area as you are right now.
When considering a relocation, remember that it’s more about the bottom line of your contract – you’ll also want to pick a place that’s actually nice to live in your eyes, as you’ll be spending a considerable amount of your time there.
Walking out of college with a degree in hand doesn’t have to be accompanied by a confused look on your face. As long as you take the time to research your field properly, know what to expect from the job market, and have a responsible attitude towards planning for your future, you should find this problem to be a very manageable one.
