Iowa University Rolls Out $2 Million Scholarship Initiative

SayCampusLife has long encouraged readers to research available scholarships as an important way to fund their education.

Most scholarships are partial, meaning that some of the student’s cost of education is covered, with a much smaller amount dedicated to actually covering all costs related to schooling. These full-ride scholarships are most desired as they eliminate the need for other funding sources to be tapped.

One Iowa school, Ashford University, which serves students at its Clinton, Iowa campus as well as online has rolled out a full-ride scholarship initiative worth taking a look at especially if you are a working parent. Called, ‘Project Working Mom … and Dads Too!’ this is the third time that Ashford has rolled out this program and the first time that fathers are included.

“When we first agreed to participate in the Project Working Mom 2 campaign last summer, we had no idea how much interest there would be in the program,” said Elizabeth Tice, Ashford University’s Provost. “The fact that we received more than 25,000 applications at Ashford University alone clearly illustrates the importance of education to working mothers across America, and that’s something we just couldn’t ignore. We’re excited to be a part of the Project Working Mom 3 campaign and look forward to receiving applications, not just from moms this time but from dads as well.”

The Ashford program is actually tied in with four other universities who together plan on offering approximately sixty full-ride scholarships to the winning recipients.

“Project Working Mom started as a single campaign to help working moms go back to school, but the response was so large that we decided to launch another campaign,” said Helen MacDermott, content director for Project Working Mom. “This time, however, in response to the voices of many dads, we have added a father-focused element.”

The full-ride online college scholarships through “Project Working Mom…and Dads Too!” are for online programs from the associate’s to Ph.D. level. To apply for a scholarship, working moms and dads may submit a short application at www.projectworkingmom.com. They will also need to complete an essay with their life, education and/or career goals and explain how an online education will allow them to achieve those goals. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is April 30, 2009.
