Raising Cash Between Semesters

-------------------------------------

With Christmas just hours away, the last thing you may be thinking about is work. That’s fine, enjoy your Christmas and the time you’ll be celebrating with family members and Moneyfriends.

Once the holiday is over, you may want to consider your options for raising cash in the few weeks you are off from school. These days your options are quite good if you are motivated and willing to step outside of the box. Read on and we’ll explore some options on how you can get the funds you want for the coming semester.

Short on cash? Out of work? Don’t despair, the following tips can help you find ways to put some money in your pocket:

Visit your local department store. Lots of people quit holiday work as Christmas approaches leaving stores short staffed to handle returns and cover upcoming sales. By the first week of January, most stores are starting their semi-annual inventory reviews and looking for helpers to get the job done. You won’t get paid a lot, but $7 to $10 per hour is within reach.

Log on and look for work. The internet can be a great place to look for work. Guru, eLance and Craiglist feature employers looking for people to build websites and blogs or help out during the first few weeks of the new year. Charge $50 to $500 per project and we’re talking about some serious cash to have on hand for the coming semester.

Pick up odd jobs. Many homeowners lament that there is a shortage of people available to shovel snow, paint a room, organize files, you name it. A family friend or neighbor could be searching for someone just like you, so ask around and make yourself available. Most people will pay you by the hour or by the job — don’t be afraid to express your renumeration needs!

Start a Business. Don’t let your studies stop you from starting a business. No, I’m not saying to quit school, but managing a small business on the side can bring in some cash and help you stay ahead of the game. You can book flights, arrange cruises, even provide writing services remotely thanks to cell phone access and your laptop computer. Set your own schedule to take on special projects as desired. Charge by the project, each leg of the tour, or by page if you are providing writing assistance.

You only have a few weeks off before you must return to school, so make the most of your time to earn some extra cash. Who knows, but the work you find now could lead to something over the summer, even open the door to a career opportunity!
