Campus Life: It’s How You Live That Counts

Campus Life: It’s How You Live That Counts
  • Opening Intro -

People go to a particular college for a lot of reasons.

Maybe one or both parents went to a particular institution.

Maybe a particular college is known for a particular field of study.

Maybe it's the setting that attracts.

-------------------------------------

Whatever the reason for choosing a school, there is one undeniable fact: besides going to school, you have to live too.

It seems like everybody has some kind of complaint about where they went to school. What is strange is the fact that complaints rarely have to do with the school itself. That stands to reason, but it’s usually the things other than the academics that get to people. The food served in the dining hall, for example. Or maybe it’s the residence halls that is the target of complaints. The good news in this is that, whether we think of them or not, there are alternatives to many of the situations that cause complaints.

Alternatives Galore

When most students arrive at their college or university, it’s often a huge mess to get in and get settled. After all, there are so many things to decide on that it’s usually a matter of getting something, but not necessarily the right thing right away. Fortunately, the amenities that are offered by today’s colleges are the result of two main factors: competition and convenience.

Competition is a primary reason that colleges offer the kinds of amenities that they do. After all, if you don’t like the things they feature, they reason–correctly–that you will opt to go someplace else.

Convenience is another reason features are determined. Simply put, colleges must accommodate the tastes and needs of a huge number of very different people. This includes the types of things they need and want as well as their lifestyles and other factors.

Food is a good example of this. What do you feed 22,000 people who arrive on your campus on a given day? And you must remember that you have not only different tastes, but different dietary needs you must account for. You need to also remember that many of these people don’t have transportation off campus, so they are stuck with on campus. You better make them happy with their food and living choices or they won’t be happy for long.

Where Does This Leave You?

College administrators know that for a wide variety of reasons, students will look at options to the offerings that their institutions make. Even American competition has made this easier and more fun with private enterprise taking over what many colleges can’t or won’t make available. For example, private enterprise has created many options for college students by offering private dorms and eating facilities nearby campuses. These feature everything from maid service to attractive dining facilities and complete recreation areas.

The bottom line in all of this is that when it comes time for you to choose things besides class schedules, make sure you check all of your options. There’s often much more to see than meets the eye. Look around. Ask questions. There’s often much more available than what you think. All you have to do is be more resourceful to look for it.
