Being a doctor is a profession that has been around for ages. One of the most lucrative and the most responsible jobs in the country, doctors are revered amongst the masses. Wanting to be a doctor involves a lot more studying even after school; not to mention, the insane amount of competition that you have to go through in order to get admission to a good medical college.
There are a number of top private medical colleges in India, yet people prefer to get into government colleges. This preference comes from deep-seated misconceptions about private colleges in general. However, a little perspective can always help:
The Competition
There is a belief that it is much harder to get into a government college as compared to even the top private medical colleges in India. However, currently there is a single national level exam (NEET) that is conducted by the CBSE, which is the only way to get admission to MBBS and BDS courses in all government and private colleges in India.
There are a few, like AIIMS, that do not accept NEET scores, but for the rest, NEET is the gateway to a medical course. A single entrance exam for all courses means that the preparation you need to make is for the exam instead of direct admissions. It all depends on your result in the exam.
Fees
This can be considered as a plus point for the government colleges as most private colleges, especially the top private medical colleges in India, have a fee that can be considered as being on the higher side. Government colleges on the other hand, have a very reasonable fee structure, making it easier for people to afford them.
The Faculty
There is a lot of confusion and discussion on which type of colleges have a better faculty to teach their students. Most people insist that most of the imminent doctors can be found in government colleges as faculty; however, all top private medical colleges in India also make sure that their faculty is top notch.
The Patient Pool
There is a definite onslaught of a lot of patients in government hospitals, giving students a chance to experience a lot of different situations. At private colleges the patient pool is a little smaller, owing to the high costs of treatment. However with fewer students, this can also be taken up as a chance for more exposure.
The Facilities
Students from the top private medical colleges in India can be considered as having an upper hand when it comes to lab tests and clinical experience. When you take admission to a private college and pay higher fees, you can be sure that the best of facilities will be available to you. This again does not mean that government colleges also do not have good facilities.
All in all, with all the factors considered, you can see that both types of colleges offer a good education and good opportunities. The main thing that may help sway your decision is the fees and of course the cut offs that the colleges offer after the entrance exam.
