College comes with a lot of expectations. Students are expected to maintain good grades, forge friendships, and engage in extracurricular activities with perfect balance. Unfortunately, this isn’t realistic for most students.
When you put your energy into one thing, something else suffers, and when you’re juggling multiple balls, it can be difficult to decide which ones should fall.
If college life has become overwhelming, place your priority on these six things to see a massive difference.
1. Nutrition
College students aren’t exactly known for their healthy nutrition habits, but if you’re feeling sluggish, your food intake could be at fault. Try not to live on coffee and jungle juice, and consider replacing your junk food runs with a quick trip to the dining hall salad bar once in a while.
Some people don’t have enough time to sit for a full meal, but many halls allow take-out containers for meals on the go. You may want to consider some supplements like those from USANA Philippines to maintain supportive habits for your body.
2. Exercise
Spending all your time in class or studying can force you to lead a pretty sedentary lifestyle, which isn’t good for your overall health. Many colleges have gyms that students can access for free, so you may as well take advantage!
You can use the equipment on your own time, or you can try a variety of classes to spice up your workout. These tend to happen at all hours of the day, so you can find something even if you have a full schedule.
3. Breaks
If you’ve been going nonstop for weeks at a time, something’s got to give. You need to schedule regular breaks to simply relax, or burnout will make that time for you. Try scheduling mini-breaks throughout your day, and longer breaks for more intensive responsibilities.
For example, if you’ve been working long days to prepare for a campus theater production, take some time to do nothing afterward rather than jumping into the next thing. If you usually pick up extra shifts at work, bask in the day off.
If you give yourself time to truly relax and recover, you’ll be more invigorated, creative, and inspired when you finally jump back in.
4. Socialization
The intense commitments of college life can leave many students feeling isolated. Long nights studying and demanding classes can make it easy to neglect friendships and avoid contact with others, but this can be detrimental to your mental health.
If you can’t remember the last time you saw your friends, ask them to meet up for coffee or dinner. You never know how much better a quick chat can make you feel.
5. Drink Water
Your body needs enough water to keep all systems running optimally, so you’ll feel the effects of dehydration pretty quickly. If you’re fatigued, can’t focus, and get a lot more headaches than usual, a lack of water could be the culprit.
Try carrying a water bottle you can fill up easily on campus.
6. Healthy Sleep
When finals are looming and there aren’t enough hours in the day, those all-nighters can start to look like your only option for a passing grade. In reality, sleep-deprived brains don’t recall information as well, so spending all that time studying in the early hours may not help you when it’s time to take the test.
Plus, all the caffeine can have some pretty uncomfortable effects if you’re consuming too much, and sleep can be harder to find when you actually want to. The next time you’re tempted to stay up and study, be honest with yourself and consider whether or not the benefits outweigh the cost.
Many college students struggle to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a busy schedule, but it’s not impossible. As you learn to prioritize your health, you’ll get better at balancing all of your many demands to create a lifestyle you’re proud of.
