If you are a high school senior, a student who is getting ready to send off your college application or apply for a scholarship, one of the most daunting parts of the application process just might be the essay. For some students putting down on paper what they’re thinking in their heads doesn’t make for a convincing essay. You may have an idea of what you want to say, but you’re uncertain just how you will say it.
Any type of essay needs to be well thought out, written with clarity and brevity, and convincing. Pull all these points together and you’ll increase the chances that a school will be interested in you, a foundation will consider your scholarship request, and more.
I’ve read up on a number of different ways that people can write an essay, but I think some of them cause confusion. Prewriting may be okay for some, but I like to work with an outline first. By jotting down some general points you want to make, you can make certain that you cover all of the finer points later on. Here is how I would write an essay:
Introductory Paragraph — In this paragraph, you want to introduce yourself and state what you are seeking (i.e., entrance into a college, applying for a scholarship, etc.) The foundation of your essay is your topic sentence, which will describe exactly what you want. From there, you’ll be able to write the body of your essay.
The Essay’s Body — The body of your essay is essentially your sales pitch for what you want. You’ll should include reasons why you are applying, what you have to offer (excellent grades, extracurricular activities, a special talent, etc.), and share other points about you that demonstrate to the reader why they would consider your application. Generally, you can cover these points in three paragraphs, so keep your points concise and expound on each one as necessary.
Your Conclusion — Every essay must come to an end and your conclusion should summarize your points while making a final pitch for why you are applying. Always thank the reader for their time and that you are looking forward to hearing back from them.
What I shared here are some general tips on how to write an essay, but you should also acquaint yourselves with completed essays already posted to the internet. My point to you is that formulating a winning essay isn’t that difficult, though you should take care to make sure that it clear, concise, convincing and correct.
