Here are four things in particular that all recent graduates should learn before trying to enter the job market
How to Apply for Jobs
Before a business major even starts looking for a job, there is a lot they should understand first. First and foremost, they have to understand how to even begin looking for a job. Business majors should understand all of the three points that go into networking and applying for jobs.
First, the resume and cover letter are crucial. It needs to be concise, neat and formatted to relate directly to the job description. Second, be professional in the interview. Yet, make sure that you make a connection with your interviewers. Third, follow up with the potential employer. Be respectful and patient throughout the waiting process.
Computer Programming Skills
Another skillset that a business major should learn are computer programming skills. Most business school programs provide a great education on economics, accounting, financial analysis, and marketing. Yet, they don’t always spend much time on computers and how they could be used in business. That’s unfortunate as that’s something that they’d really benefit from.
Furthermore, it would be helpful to take classes that focus on learning software programs, like angular js. Such classes can help you obtain a basic understanding of coding and programming.
Workplace Etiquette
One thing that you really need to understand is proper workplace etiquette. One of the biggest challenges recent graduates have after entering the workforce is understanding how to conduct themselves. Perhaps they’re not used to being professional, but it’s important that they learn how to pretty quickly! That is why every student should obtain work experience prior to graduating to learn such skills.
Another option would be to attend a class through a career counseling seminar. There, they can get tips on proper meeting conduct and approaching people in various ranking business positions. They may even learn how to dress for certain based on an office dress code and different events.
Portray Confidence
Going into a first job can be a very intimidating and scary experience. Yet, confidence is your bread and butter when it comes to impressing potential employers. The key to that is appearing calm, despite whatever intimidation you may be feeling. You can help with this by looking your best. Look people in the eye when you were speaking to them.
Anyone looking for a job would do well to follow the above advice. The job market can be a hard place for anyone to be in. However, with your major qualifications and confidence in tow, you should do just fine.
