Here are some tips on how to plan your first road trip.
Find Your Destination
While there is plenty of value in the journey, you eventually want to arrive somewhere after driving. Get together with your friends and pick a spot you want to go.
It doesn’t necessarily have to be very far away, especially if it is your first time driving long distances. There might be a town you can visit and get back home on the same day. It can even be as easy as picking a concert or another event a few hours away.
Give Yourself Plenty of Time
You may not be a morning person but planning to leave as early as possible gives you more options in terms of detours, including finding scenic routes, scheduling rest breaks, and eating out at restaurants along the way.
Leaving early also gives you the benefit of beating traffic which can significantly stress out newer drivers. If you’re planning to travel long distances, don’t try to rush the trip. It’s okay to find a hotel and get a good night’s sleep so you can stay alert on the road.
Have Your Vehicle Inspected
The last thing you want with a car full of people is to break down in the middle of nowhere. Find a mechanic you trust and have them do a check-up on your vehicle.
If you’ve been putting off that oil change or tune-up you’ve been needing, now is the time to get it done. Top off all your fluids and get an all-clear to give you and your friends the peace of mind to enjoy the open road.
Sign Up for Roadside Assistance
If the worst-case scenario does happen and your vehicle breaks down, you don’t want to pay for an expensive tow. Companies like AAA offer affordable memberships that can tow your car for free and bring gas if you accidentally run out.
Check your auto insurance to see if you can upgrade to a policy that can perform similar actions.
Dress Comfortably
When on the road, you’ll be sitting in one spot for much of the time. You might have the urge to dress fashionably and wear tight jeans with a slim-fitting shirt, but eventually you’re going to start feeling uncomfortable.

Pay special attention to your feet and wear socks that keep you warm and feeling fresh. You’ll also want to wear a cozy outfit you can stretch out in and pack clothing you can go out in for when you’re off the road.
Pack Some Snacks
Having all your favorite foods on hand can help deal with hunger pangs between stops. Pack plenty of snacks beforehand to help save money from buying them at convenience stores and gas stations.
You can even make a nice lunch for everyone and find a rest area to have an outdoor picnic.
