One obvious advantage is that you can share the expenses such as the rent and can be a great study buddy. Some of the disadvantages is that, they could be really annoying to the point that it’s difficult to study.
Sometimes it’s not your choice to be assigned to a particular person as you find it hard to cooperate with him/her. In response to this, it is important to have a set of ground rules for you and your fellow roomies to follow so not to be offended and have a calm, relaxing environment for you to study.
1. ASSIGN CHORE DUTIES
Chores are probably the most tedious tasks that college roommates may encounter. There’s a chance that you’ve never done the dishes nor cleaned the bathroom when you were at home. You might be in for a real culture shock when you step in to college. Assign who does what on corresponding days. That way, no one could make an excuse.
2. BE CONSIDERATE ABOUT OTHER’S FOOD AND STUFF
A lone soda drink or a slice of cake in the fridge can be a very tempting thing not to ignore.Yet, always remember that if it’s not yours, ask for permission first if you could take it. Some of your roommates may be sensitive about their personal things and things might get out of hand when you’re not too careful.
3. MUSIC IS THE KEY TO CALM THE SAVAGE BEAST
Another thing that’s important to mention is the music. There are a lot of music genre out there that others may find unappealing to their ears. Some would even play it out on high volume, disturbing the other dorm rooms.
Always remind this kind of roommate to lower down his/her volume. If not, buy him a set of inexpensive earbuds or headsets. That would give him/her some idea that the music that their playing is not for you.
4. DON’T FORGET YOUR KEYS
Having your own key to your dorm is essential especially if you have a roomie that tends to go out and party the night away. It is also beneficial to the both of you especially when one is sleeping and you just happen to go home late at night. You don’t need to bother him/her opening the door for you.
CONCLUSION
It’s awesome to have someone to talk with especially with your studies and your personal life. Your roommate may be that kind of person that would help you get the degree you’re studying for. If this is not your kind of roommate, it’s not too late for them to change.
