But if there’s one area that shouldn’t be stressful, it’s a student’s dorm.
Even so, the cold, often cluttered space where we rest our heads at night can be just as big a source of stress as exams. If you want to create a soothing haven for yourself, check out these tips for making your dorm more relaxing and stress-free.
Declutter and Organize
Organization doesn’t come to us all naturally, especially not in the first space that’s all our own away from our parents. Even so, the human mind is naturally ill-at-ease in cluttered, chaotic, and dirty areas. So one of the first steps to creating a relaxing and stress-free dorm is to remove the clutter.
Start by going through and purging your things, getting rid of old papers, garbage, and clothes you don’t wear. Then, take what’s left and make sure everything has a “place” in your room. This may require investing in bins and hangable wall slots to store things in.
Create Boundaries
Part of organizing should also include creating clear boundaries within your space. And we don’t only mean the boundaries between your things and your roommate’s.
Most likely, everything in your dorm room will fall under two main categories: schoolwork and personal. When you try to keep your school things to one part of your room—around your desk, for example—it helps you create a better sense of work-life balance to keep you from worrying about school work after you’ve finished studying.
Level Up Your Bed’s Comfort
No matter where you go to school, dorm beds aren’t always the most comfortable. And since getting ample sleep is essential for staying stress-free, the poor mattress situation can become an obstacle between you and a relaxing space.
Fortunately, there are plenty of little ways that you can make your bed more comfortable, such as:
- Buying a mattress pad
- Investing in high-quality bedsheets
- Getting a duvet or comforter
- Buying extra pillows
Add Gentler Lighting
But your bed is only one of many things that make for an ideal sleep environment. One underappreciated factor related to relaxation and sleep is lighting.

Many dorms come with fluorescent lighting, which is harsh on the eyes and irritating to one’s mood. Believe it or not, that’s not a good combination for sleep.
While you can’t change the lighting your dorm comes with, you can put other lighting options in your room. Bringing in your own lamps with bulbs that mirror natural light as much as possible is more mood-elevating.
You can also bring gentler lights, such as twinkle lights, to put on before bed to help ease you into sleep.
