5 Highly Unusual College Majors
  • Opening Intro -

Your degree in engineering or business administration is the typical run-of-the-mill educational path for millions of college students.

Some colleges, however, seek to offer majors that can only be described as unusual, providing ways for students to obtain a degree in an area that may be unique to their field.

We’ll take a look at five unusual college majors and the schools that offer these programs.

1. Cosmetic and Fragrance Marketing — Only a university such as the State University of New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology could dream up a marketing curriculum that places an emphasis on looks and smell. Its Master’s in Professional Studies, Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing and Management program is unique, a way for students to combine their management skills with their desire to advance personal care brands that consumers embrace.

2. Comedy: Writing and Performance — Canada’s Humber College offers a two-year diploma program in Comedy. Its School of Creative & Performing Arts prepares students for work on sitcoms, as stand-up comedians, for sketch comedy or other humor-related skills. You know that you are funny — now you can learn from the best and participate in the college’s own Yuk Yuk Comedy Club.

3. Quaker Studies — The Society of Friends, also known as the Quakers, have a unique faith, one based on a very simple Christian background. Earlham College in Indiana is associated with the Quakers and offers a Quaker Studies program to teach religious thought. It can also provide a pathway to students seeking a deeper “Friends” experience, one that tends to the more esoteric if that is your taste.

4. Wine Business — It makes sense that Sonoma State University in California would offer wine-related courses. Specifically, its Wine Business Institute is all about helping future professionals grow a brand, advance brand loyalty, manage the business and streamline production. While the institute is important to the Golden State’s wine growers, students can take what they learn anywhere in the world.

5. Diving Business & Technology –You have always known that you love the great outdoors and may have imagined yourself working as a park ranger. That’s okay if you love trees, bears and ticks, but if you prefer to hang around sharks, coral reefs and perhaps search for sunken treasure, then a two-year A.S. program in Diving Business & Technology at Florida Keys Community College may be right for you. You’ll get certified as a scuba diver and find work at many of the more than 5,700 dive shops and resorts in the world.

Your Aspirations

Of course, your career aspirations may take a well beaten path and that’s okay. If you want to take a different road, then there are options available to you. Reach for the stars or in the example of the diving program, just jump in and get your entire body wet.
